Christian conservatives declare war on 'Gay' at Liberty University

¨Last weekend at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., Christian conservatives were caught on tape planning a war not only on gays and lesbians, but a war on the word "gay" itself.

The occasion was the Awakening Conference. There social conservatives, convinced there is some sort of nefarious "homosexual agenda," planned a counter attack against what they perceive to be a dangerous liberal conspiracy to promote the gay lifestyle.

The conference took a turn for the surreal when panelists speaking at the conference suggested they stop using the word "gay" all together.¨ HERE

That infamous bill was presented in this parliament. The international reaction was strong, and, it led to the government withdrawing support for the bill.

Now, elections for a new parliament happened. And, Bahati would have to present the bill again, in the next parliament, if it lapses in this parliament.

So, Bahati and co are doing a campaign. Pressure the outgoing parliament to make the bill law.

And, they are stirring up lots of dust. And, they have the strength of numbers.

This parliament has until May to conclude its business.

Should I be worried?

Well, the bill demands the death penalty for such as me. Serial offenders. Of course, life imprisonment when caught on a first offence. And, of course, this blog is a promotion of homosexuality. Which the bill criminalises...please read it all,  HERE

UPDATE: US Department of State: Religious Fundamentalism at Heart of Uganda's Human Rights Problem

¨The United States Department of State submitted its annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices to the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Committee on Foreign Relations of the Senate as required by law for "countries that receive assistance" among others. The Uganda Report addresses the religious fundamentalism at the heart of Uganda's human rights problem.

The Uganda Report specifically mentions the rallies conducted by religious fundamentalists like Pastor Martin Ssempa where "participants openly threatened LGBT individuals." MP David Bahati and former Ethics and Integrity Minister Nsaba James Buturo are also mentioned by name. The report states emphatically that the Anti-Homosexuality Bill of 2009 violates "the Ugandan constitution and international law." please read it all HERE

¨Retired Anglican Bishop Christopher Senyonjo, an outspoken activist for human rights and equality in Uganda, delivered a presentation at the United Nations in New York on April 8 calling for the global decriminalization of homosexuality as a way to make progress in the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

"The criminalization of homosexuality remains the most significant barrier that needs to be dismantled to reduce the spread of AIDS," said Senyonjo, during a panel discussion that formed part of an informal interactive hearing at the U.N. "We need to make our laws and agreements more binding. We need to ask if our laws or beliefs help or prevent the spread of HIV and hinder or support families caring for loved ones."

Senyonjo noted that more than 80 countries still criminalize homosexuality "and see it as a crime against God and nature. Denying people their humanity puts us all at risk because AIDS spreads fast in the darkness of ignorance." HERE

HERE  reports that Makerere University student leaders said in a meeting with the chairman of the committee handling the Anti-Homosexuality Bill that recruitment of gays was rampant at the university campus. The students told Mr. Tashobya (in charge of the committee) that each of their colleagues who join homosexuals is paid a monthly salary of Shs800, 000.

I have no idea how much Ugandan money that is — but it sounds like some serious coin. We also know, due to reality and common sense, that this allegation is pure propaganda and utterly false. Exactly, who is paying these students? Until there is proof, such allegations should not be made and those putting forth such lies should be punished.

I’m still in shock. In one of the most anti-gay nations on earth — gays are getting salaries. Do they have to take out taxes for such services?

Seriously, what next, accusations that gay people roast children and eat them for snacks?

I’m not trying to be judgmental — but the anti-gay Ugandan legislators sound remarkably ignorant. How uniformed (particularly in the Internet age) does one have to be to believe such bile? Or maybe raw hatred makes some people blind to the complete incoherence and idiocy of the arguments put forth by supporters of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill.¨

Older Gays and Lesbians More Likely to Live Alone, More Likely to Have Health Problems

Now maybe the problem is that "gay culture tends to be youth-driven," as one of the researchers theorizes, because you know gay men are crazy for hot college boys. Or it could be that older gay men and lesbians came of age at a time when homophobia and discrimination were much more toxic and pervasive, when there was no support whatsoever—no marriage rights, no domestic partnership benefits—for same-sex couples, when our families-of-origin were much more likely to be extremely hostile, and when it was much more difficult for out gay men and lesbians to start their own families (we couldn't adopt, undergo artificial insemination, hire surrogates, etc.). And childless gay men and lesbians who were cast out or cut off by families-of-origin decades ago are less likely to know, much less have relationships with, the same nieces, nephews, and cousins that their older, single, childless straight relatives rely on for support. And in the case of gay men over 50, it could be that they lost many of their peers, friends, lovers, and partners to a deadly epidemic.

In short, there are a lot of reasons why the first generation of gays and lesbians to live openly might not have the same kind of support in old age that their straight peers do. Blaming the fact that gay people, like straight people, find the young and hot to be young and hot shifts the blame.

Fired Gay Priest Gets New Teaching Job

¨You may recall the story of Father James St. George, a popular Old Catholic Church Of The Americas priest who was fired from his job at Chestnut Hill College earlier this year for being gay even though he never hid that fact from anyone.

Good news for St. George as he has just been hired to teach at the University of Pennsylvania:

"James St. George is teaching a class on religion, social justice, and urban development, together with another member of Penn's teaching staff."

"'It feels good to be teaching again,' St. George told the Inquirer. Father James St. George said he was dismissed from his teaching job at Chestnut Hill College on February 18 because of his sexual orientation. HERE
