STATE DEPARTMENT REPORT ON JAMAICA'S LGBT'S REVEAL "ARBITRARY DETENTIONS, MOB ATTACKS, STABBINGS, HARASSMENT AND TARGETED SHOOTINGS"
Jim Burroway
March 17th, 2009
Two weeks ago, the U.S. State Department issued its annual Human Rights Report for 2008. Jamaica, a favorite holiday destination for millions of Americans, was singled out for extensive official and unofficial abuse of LGBT citizens of that country.
Other Societal Abuses and Discrimination
The law prohibits “acts of gross indecency” (generally interpreted as any kind of physical intimacy) between men, in public or in private, which are punishable by 10 years in prison.
The Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All Sexuals, and Gays (J-FLAG) continued to report human rights abuses, including arbitrary detention, mob attacks, stabbings, harassment of homosexual patients by hospital and prison staff, and targeted shootings of homosexuals. Police often did not investigate such incidents.
J-FLAG members also suffered attacks on their property, home intrusions as people demanded to know the number of persons and beds in a home, and in one instance, a fire bombing at the home of two men that left one of them with burns on more than 60 percent of his body. In addition homosexuals faced death and arson threats, with some of these directed at the J-FLAG offices. J-FLAG did not publicize its location due to such threats, and its officials reported feeling unsafe having meetings with clients at the organization’s office.
In February a mob broke into the home of four presumed homosexual men, killing three of them. The fourth was missing and presumed dead. The men had reported being harassed for their perceived sexual orientation prior to the fatal attack. Police made some inquiries in the case but did not conduct a full investigation or make any arrests by year’s end.
The trial of six suspects arrested for the 2005 robbery and murder of Lenford “Steve” Harvey, initially begun and then postponed in 2007, was scheduled to recommence in January 2009.
Male inmates deemed by prison wardens to be homosexual were held in a separate facility for their protection. The method used for determining their sexual orientation was subjective and not regulated by the prison system, although inmates were said to confirm their homosexuality for their own safety. There were numerous reports of violence against homosexual inmates, perpetrated by the wardens and by other inmates, but few inmates sought recourse through the prison system.
Homosexual men were hesitant to report incidents against them because of fear for their physical well-being. Lesbian women were subject to sexual assault as well as other physical attacks. Human rights NGOs and government entities agreed that brutality against homosexuals, primarily by private citizens, was widespread in the community.
Anglican anti-LGBT Archbishop Drexel Gomez of The West Indies and other religious and public officials "shrug off anti-LBGT violence"
"We reported on the mob killing last February. The situation in Jamaica has continued to deteriorate, with high-ranking Jamaican officials shrugging off anti-LGBT violence. Calls for “tolerance” in the popular media have remained decidedly one-sided by advocating tolerance only for those who espouse homophobic hatred. Courts in the United States, Canada and Europe have been providing asylum to LGBT Jamaicans who fear for their lives if they are forced to return. Meanwhile, support for boycotting Jamaica continues to build. Stay tuned." read it all, click here
It's time for RELIGIOUS LEADERS TO CALL FOR JUSTICE AND TOLERANCE:
Anglican Bishop Alfred Reid, Jamaica:
"It should be emphasised that the Church in Jamaica, in collegiality with others in the Province of the West Indies and the rest of the worldwide Communion, seeks to work for consensus, not divisiveness, and to maintain the fellowship of the Communion without compromising its integrity," Reid said. "It is in that spirit that ongoing discussions on the most contentious and often painful matter will be conducted."
THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY IS COMING TO JAMAICA, MAY 2-14, 2009 TO "EXCHANGE INFORMATION BETWEEN THE 38 PROVINCES AND CHURCHES IN THE ANGLICAN COMMUNION" PERHAPS ARCHBISHOP ROWAN WILLIAMS AND THE REST OF THE "150 DELEGATES REPRESENTING 164 NATIONS" (especially Bishop Drexel Gomez, Primate of The West Indies and Dr Alfred Reid, Bishop of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands) WILL ISSUE CALLS FOR DISCUSSION OF THE INTOLERANCE DIRECTED AGAINST LGBT ANGLICANS/CHRISTIANS AND OTHERS BEFORE WE ARE ALL PERSECUTED AND MURDERED IN COLD BLOOD BY EVERYDAY THUGS (RELIGIOUS OR NOT)!
The Rt. Rev. Alfred Reid (left), Anglican Bishop of Jamaica, planning the upcoming ACC Meeting with the Rt. Rev. Robert Thompson, Anglican Suffragan Bishop of Kingston who is the "Design Chair" for the event.
IT IS TIME THE ANGLICAN COMMUNION STARTS DEALING WITH THE DEADLY REALITY OF RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE AND THE SELFRIGHTEOUS ENCOURAGING OF HOMOPHOBIC HATRED THAT IS OFTEN PREACHED AS 'BIBLICAL' AND IMPLIMENTED AS 'LOVING THE SINNER AND HATING THE SIN.' HOWEVER, THIS 'SPIRITUALIKE FANTASY' VIOLATES BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS AND TAKES THE FORM OF ABUSE WHEN PROMOTING THE HATE CRIMES THAT ARE RUNNING RAMPANT IN JAMAICA, UGANDA, NIGERIA AND BEYOND!
WHERE is the outreach and MINISTRY for LGBT ANGLICANS IN JAMAICA, UGANDA, NIGERIA and THE MIDDLE EAST? Must tens of thousands more LGBT CHRISTIANS/OTHERS SUFFER VILE HUMILIATION, OUTCASTING AND TORMENT before RELIGIOUS AUTHORITIES ADDRESS FEAR AND HATE-MONGERING AT CHURCH?
LGBT CHRISTIANS are being abused, persecuted, jailed, demoralized and murdered DAILY in the UNITED KINGDOM, CANADA, THE UNITED STATES, AFRICA, THE MIDDLE EAST and LATIN AMERICA.
IT'S URGENTLY NECESSARY FOR DR. WILLIAMS AND THE ANGLICAN CONSULTATIVE COUNCIL TO CO-ORDINATE A "COMMON MISSIONARY ACTIVITY" THAT NOT ONLY IS A VITAL ANGLICAN LEGACY and moral RESPONSIBILITY to ALL Anglicans but will also SAVE THE LIVES of CHRISTIANS and OTHERS in the WORLD around us where bigotry and fear and hate are instigated at Church!
"EXCHANGING INFORMATION" hasn´t been rejecting, OR DENOUNCING, well known chronic VIOLATORS OF HUMAN RIGHTS preached against LGBT ANGLICANS/OTHERS IN JAMAICA, UGANDA, NIGERIA, IRAN, IRAQ AND EGYPT BY RELIGIOUS BISHOP EXTREMISTS at THE ANGLICAN COMMUNION!
WHEN "EXCHANGING INFORMATION BETWEEN THE 38 PROVINCES AND CHURCHES IN THE ANGLICAN COMMUNION" CHAIRPERSON ARCHBISHOP ROWAN WILLIAMS AND THE REST OF THE "150 DELEGATES REPRESENTING 164 NATIONS" OUGHT SPEAK OUT AGAINST THE ABUSED LGBT MEMBERS OF 'THE BODY OF CHRIST.' The ABC and the ACC must ISSUE A FORMAL CALL FOR TOLERANCE FOR LGBT ANGLICANS/CHRISTIANS AND OTHERS BEFORE MORE INNOCENTS ARE UNJUSTLY PERSECUTED, DISCRIMINATED AGAINST, DEMONIZED, ABUSED, JAILED AND/OR VICTIMS OF MORE AND MORE CRIMES OF HATE and DEMORALIZATION!
NOW IS THE TIME TO DEAL WITH THE REALITY OF RELIGIOUS ABUSE THAT IS PREACHED and PROMOTED AT THE ANGLICAN COMMUNION!
IT IS TIME FOR THE ANGLICAN COMMUNION TO DEAL WITH THE REALITY OF THE RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE AND HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSE DIRECTED AGAINST LGBT CHRISTIANS/OTHERS. THE HOMOPHOBIC HATRED THAT IS GENERATED, PREACHED AND PROMOTED FROM SOME PULPITS MUST BE CHALLENGED. VICIOUS and UNCHARITABLE BISHOPS and OTHER EXTREMIST CLERGY at ANGLICAN COMMUNION MEMBER PROVINCES harm other members at The Body of Christ. Not just a little ¨harming.¨ Acting out against LGBT Christians/others by taking violent criminal action IS RUNNING RAMPANT IN JAMAICA, UGANDA, NIGERIA, IRAQ, IRAN and EGYPT!
Doctor Rowan Williams, the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury, will visit Jamaica next month to attend a meeting of the Anglican Consultative Council (ACC).
WILLIAMS... will attend May 2 to 14 meeting in Kingston
The archbishop is the president of the ACC, one of the three instruments of communion which serves the worldwide family of Anglican/Episcopal Churches.
Anglicans are said to be looking forward to the May 2 to 14 Kingston meeting, which will see some 150 delegates representing 164 nations in attendance.
The Diocese of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands said plans for the meeting are well advanced.
"The ACC meets every three years, and its present policy is to meet in different parts of the world. This is the Council's second meeting in the Caribbean since delegates gathered for the third ACC meeting in Trinidad in 1976. Other meetings have been held in Kenya, the Republic of Ireland, Canada, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, Nigeria, Singapore, Wales, South Africa, Panama, Scotland, Hong Kong, and Nottingham, England. read it all, click here
The invitation to hold the meeting in Jamaica was extended by the Rev Dr Alfred Reid, Bishop of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, and received support from the other seven Dioceses within the Province of the West Indies. A Local Design Group, chaired by the Bishop of Kingston, has been meeting since April 2008 to coordinate the activities for this historic meeting.read more, click here:
"The ACC was formed following a resolution of the Lambeth Conference of 1968 which identified the need for more frequent and more representative contact among the Churches than was possible through a once-a-decade conference of Bishops. The Council, which was established in October 1969, held its first meeting in 1971, and facilitates:
. Co-operative work among the churches of the Anglican Communion;
. The exchange of information between the 38 Provinces and churches in the Communion
. Co-ordination of common missionary activities common to all.
It also advises on the organisation and structures of the Communion, and seeks to develop common policies with respect to the world mission of the Church, including ecumenical matters."
IS IT TIME TO DISCUSS "SEXUAL CLEANSING?"
The Anglican Church in the Province of the West Indies. It is made up of two mainland dioceses and six island dioceses, including Barbados, Belize, Guyana, Jamaica, Nassau and the Bahamas, Tobago, Trinidad, and the Windward Islands. Great emphasis is being placed on training personnel for an indigenous ministry.
The Anglican Communion - the Anglican Church around the world - is in turmoil over the issue of homosexuality. Traditionalists are strongly opposed to the ordination of gay clergy and the blessing of same-sex relationships whereas liberals are urging tolerance and change. A rift developed in 2003 after the consecration in the US of an openly gay bishop, Gene Robinson. The ordination of female priests is also a contentious issue. In June 2008 some 1,100 traditionalist Anglicans gathered in Jerusalem at the Global Anglican Future Conference (Gafcon) to form a network to combat modern trends in the Church." read it all, click here
"HOW MANY OF US KNOW SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN TREATED POORLY BECAUSE THEY ARE GAY, LESBIAN, TRANSGENDERED, OR BISEXUAL? Many of us know someone who has been treated poorly because they are gay, lesbian, transgendered, or bisexual."
Sexual Cleansing is using extreme measures to suppress gays and lesbians. Hitler did it. During World War II he rounded up gays and put a pink triangle on them and sent them to concentration camps.
Sexual Cleansing is occurring today in Iraq and other countries. In Iraq there are death squads that shoot, hang, and torture people they suspect of being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered. Some Islamic clerics sanction these death squads. The fatwa, available on Sistani’s official Web site, puts it this way, “The people involved [in homosexuality] should be killed in the worst, most severe way of killing.”
In Nepal the police have beaten people who are transgendered. It is because they have deemed being transgendered immoral. The transgendered are called metis in Nepal. The police arrest them, beat them, make them strip off all their cloths and mock them while holding their genitals.
In South Africa a lesbian football (soccer) player was gang raped and murdered. In another incident a mob of men chased down and murdered a lesbian.
It goes on all over the world. Lets not be so naïve that it doesn’t happen here in the United States in some form. Brandon Tina, Matthew Shepard, Paul Broussard, Lawrence King, Julianne M. Williams and Laura S. “Louie” Winans are some of the names of people who have been murdered in the Untied States for being gay, transgendred, or lesbian.

UPDATE/PRESIDENT OBAMA: ¨Decriminalize Homosexuality Worldwide¨
"The United States supports the UN Statement on 'Human Rights, Sexual Orientation, and Gender Identity,' and is pleased to join the other 66 UN member states who have declared their support of this Statement that condemns human rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity wherever they occur," State Department acting spokesman Robert Wood said in a statement.
"The United States is an outspoken defender of human rights and critic of human rights abuses around the world. As such, we join with the other supporters of this Statement and we will continue to remind countries of the importance of respecting the human rights of all people in all appropriate international fora," read it all, click here:

Let's hope Dr Rowan and pals read this!
You know, we need to be sending individual communications to Rowan Williams, no?
I think we should start a campaign to paper Rowan (a new spin on the paper tiger) asking that he ... what? What can and do we ask for? Has to be something he CAN do...?
Cany and Göran,
I don´t know how to get the ABC´s attention regarding HATE CRIMES directed against LGBT worldwide (there was actually one committed during The Lambeth Conference last Summer in Liverpool and ++Rowan ignored it as 19 year old Michael Causer died of brain injuries)...it seems the ABC only reacts to vile international incidents AFTER THE FACT and AFTER GREAT BRITAIN blasts the abusers (anywhere/everywhere) beforehand...in Jamaica, the ABC is WALTZING into a ACC Meeting in the most deadly and abusive anti-LGBT Province of The Western Hemisphere (ALL of the countries that make up the Province of the West Indies have laws proclaiming LGBT people to be illegal, sex or no sex)!
IS Rowan Williams, The Archbishop of Canterbury, prepared to speak about REAL PROBLEMS within the ANGLICAN COMMUNION? Is he prepared to SPEAK OUT against HATE CRIMES committed against LGBT Anglicans/others in the Province of The West Indies and beyond?
Is the topic of Hate Crimes done against LGBT Christians simply too challenging, or too unimportant, for the ABC to discuss at the ACC Meeting?
BTW...the ONLY LAWS AGAINST LGBT citizens existing are IN THE countries that make up the PROVINCE OF THE WEST INDIES...I will refer your ¨why´s¨ to Archbishop Drexel Gomez the instigator of ¨difference¨and ¨hate¨ against LGBT Anglicans/Christians and others in the West Indies (and he´d like to think elsewhere too). He´s also the ¨chairperson¨ for The Anglican Covenant Design Group...now, that must be a ¨challenge¨ for a person who torments and abuses fellow Anglicans.
In the Western Hemisphere...sorry, I missed that part as we see new outragious, and morally corrupt, laws against LGBT Christians/Anglicans and others being shaped in Nigeria and Uganda too. Deadly madness being initiated at The Anglican Communion.
Virtueonline of everlasting shame has called Dr Rowan a "waste of space" for years.
Sometimes I think the have a point...
Just to see the pleased-with-himself mine in this photograph is revolting.
Dear Göran,
I´ve always wanted to like the Archbishop of Canterbury...I´ve never been able to understand him. His bogged down thinking and snide approach to The Western Hemisphere reflects inferior attempts at good will and inhumane ¨listening¨ (a day in New Orleans at the HOB won´t ¨cut it¨)...somehow he has time to entertain the likes of Bishop Venables (repeatedly) at Lambeth Palace and ignores the FULL VOICE of Latin America (why didn´t he attend the recent meeting of Primates and Bishops from Latin America?)...journing to Jamaica for the ACC Meeting and NOT MENTIONING THE COUNTRY in the Western Hemisphere where the MOST most personal violations and crimes of HATE against LGBT/others are committed would be tragic (it´s like going to Haiti and NOT mentioning the extreme famine and all-around poverty at the largest diocese of TEC)...passing a glaring opportunity to address the HATE CRIME issue on the FRONT LINES of the problem, in Jamaica, would be morally irresponsible...now is the time to approach the POGROM initiated in Uganda and Nigeria too...we must not keep looking the other way. The ABC MUST START TAKING A MORAL LEAD (or not)...if he wishes to tip-toe around the murdering, the thuggery, the witch hunt promoted by Bishops (from Uganda, Nigeria, Kenya and Egypt) at the Anglican Communion, well, ++Rowan is NOT doing his job.
BTW I also dislike the artificial attempt at good-will towards all that the above photo communicates.
++Rowan doesn´t know selfrighteousness from wrongness generated against fellow Christians...not a good thing when one is in a position of moral leadership.
Where is his TRUST in God? Is he a coward or simply a dodgy, feckless figurehead and religious stooge?
No, he is not doing his job.
